I've been teasing this on my Twitter feed for a bit and I'm quite happy to be able to announce it today -- The Game Beat now has a bi-weekly column crossposted on Gamasutra and GameSetWatch. The first one, which went up today, is about how many critics seem preoccupied with the short length of recent Xbox Live Arcade release Limbo. Here's a taste:
Without a doubt, Xbox Live Arcade’s Limbo is an instant classic. The reviews are near-unanimous in their praise. Limbo is “bleak and beautiful.” It’s “haunting.” It’s “elegant and minimalistic.” It’s “clever." It’s “gorgeously constructed." It “will stay with you for a very long time.” Some are already calling it “a masterpiece.” Others are breaking out the dreaded a-word: “Art.”
But there’s one other thing Limbo reviewers are almost equally unanimous about. Some seem almost reluctant to bring it up. Others seem proud that they were able to find some flaw to balance out an otherwise glowing review.
Regardless, the critical consensus seems to be that Limbo is excellent but, well... it’s kind of short.
Leaves you panting and wanting more, doesn't it? If so, please feel free to read the whole thing.
What does this mean for this site? Not much, really. I'll still be posting my (hopefully) daily link roundups, and occasional longer-form thoughts as they come to me -- though I suppose I may save some of the best those for the bi-weekly column. Anyway, it shouldn't be a big difference to you, the reader, as all those columns will be listed and linked here as well. So stop your whining, voices in my head!
Burying the Lede is a (hopefully) daily collection of interesting game-journalism-related links I've come across that don't require a full post but that I still wanted to share.
Didja miss me? Three weeks worth of links to catch up on, so these will be a little longer than normal for a while.
Hey all, just wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten about this blog and the daily Burying the Lede updates (or the more in-depth updates I'm theoretically still doing). What I did forget is to tell you that I'll be away on an Italian holiday through next Monday, and then away covering the Develop conference in Brighton for the rest of next week. Expect updates to resume after that.

- The always-excellent Escapist is all about game journalism this week! You should read it all, of course, but I especially recommend Kieron Gillen talking about the post-New-Games-Journalism-games-journalism and a great Peter Parrish piece on review score inflation.
- A few weeks back, I wrote a whole piece about the mistakes Microsoft made with its Kinect/Cirque de Soleil press event -- a piece I left to languish and die as an unfinished draft. Meanwhile, Ars Technica's Ben Kuchera actually finished his piece on the same subject, and included some comparisons to Activision's party to boot.
- Nominees for the E3 2010 Game Critics awards were announced today, thought I'm guessing most of them were actually decided months ago at exclusive pre-show briefings.
- A non-gamer (with a writing background, it seems) checks out Tom Bissell's Extra Lives and comes away impressed with the book and, by extension, the video game medium, to an extent.
- "A good review isn’t a good review. It’s a review you agree with."
